Half-Hexagon Shawl is an original PlanetJune Accessories crochet pattern by June Gilbank.
The Half-Hexagon shawl wraps you in a crocheted hug without any excess fabric, and drapes almost like an elegant cardigan. The lacy pattern is simple enough to take advantage of a yarn with long colour changes, or use the optional contrast-colour version of the border to give a standout finish if you're working in a single colour. Worked from the centre top, you can just keep crocheting until the shawl is the size you want and then add the decorative border.
My lace patterns are designed to be worked with normal-sized hooks into the spaces between stitches, which means that there's no hunting for those tiny fine loops to work into, and they are a pleasure to work.
Size: The size of the shawl is totally up to you - just keep crocheting until it's the size you wish! Please bear in mind that it may grow when you block it (especially if you use natural fibre yarn – my acrylic samples did not stretch significantly).
- Solid sample shawl measures 55” (wingspan) x 20” (tall)
- Variegated sample shawl measures 60" (wingspan) x 22" (tall)
Difficulty: easy/intermediate
Yarn and hook: Yarn of your choice (any yarn weight will work with this pattern; using a thicker yarn will increase the size of the stitch pattern and make the resulting shawl bulkier) and an appropriate hook (hook size advice is provided in the pattern)
- Solid sample used 620m/678yds super fine weight 85% acrylic/15%nylon yarn and an I US/5.5mm hook, plus 75m/80yds more of the same yarn in a contrasting colour for the border
- Variegated sample used 440m/480yds light weight 58% cotton/39% acrylic/3% other yarn and a J US/6mm hook
